I'm not normally a fan of iconic places. They are too touristy for me. I have never liked the Champs Elysees or Eiffel Tower or the Tower of London. I don't like places that have become decontextualized icons, visited only by tourists, but not by the people who live there. However, when in Chicago, I found myself entranced by the beauty of The Bean, and here, I was facinated by The Arch. The sheer beauty combined with the amazing feat of engineering made it seem like a lot more than an item on a tourist checklist.
